Polarized Gravitational Waves from Gamma-Ray Bursts
Significant gravitational wave emission is expected from gamma-ray bursts arising from compact stellar mergers, and possibly also from bursts associated with fast-rotating massive stellar core collapses. These models have in common a high angular rotation rate, and observations provide evidence for jet collimation of the photon emission, with properties depending on the polar angle. Here we con...
متن کاملPolarized cosmological gravitational waves from primordial helical turbulence.
We show that helical turbulence produced during a first-order phase transition generates circularly polarized cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). The characteristic frequency of these GWs for an extreme case of the phase transition model is around 10(-3)-10(-2) Hz with an energy density parameter as high as 10(-12)-10(-11). The possibility of detection is briefly discussed.
متن کاملLinearly polarized waves with constant phase velocity in relativistic plasmas
The propagation of plane linearly polarized electromagnetic waves in cold plasmas at relativistic intensities is studied analytically under the assumption of a constant phase velocity. A system of coupled relativistic harmonic oscillators for the Lagrangian coordinates of the particles is derived. Based on this model, a perturbation expansion is carried out to solve the equations for small plas...
متن کاملGravitational Waves and the Sagnac Effect
We consider light waves propagating clockwise and other light waves propagating counterclockwise around a closed path in a plane (theoretically with the help of stationary mirrors). The time difference between the two light propagating path orientations constitutes the Sagnac effect. The general relativistic expression for the Sagnac effect is discussed. It is shown that a gravitational wave in...
متن کاملThe gravitational-wave memory effect
The nonlinear memory effect is a slowly growing, non-oscillatory contribution to the gravitational-wave amplitude. It originates from gravitational waves that are sourced by the previously emitted waves. In an ideal gravitationalwave interferometer a gravitational wave with memory causes a permanent displacement of the test masses that persists after the wave has passed. Surprisingly, the nonli...
